10 questions about business networking

At a recent webinar hosted by Donaghey & Chance, attendees asked many questions and for advice around business networking. To help others, we have condensed some of the most popular questions we are asked during networking training when business professionals are attending networking events.

What is meant by business networking?

You’ve often heard the term that your network is your net-worth. Having a strong network around you can help when it comes to progressing in your career by introducing you to new people and potential clients. Business networking is a way of cultivating and growing that network through a number of strategy ways.

Why is networking so important?

Networking is important because it helps create connections, opportunities, and build relationships that can advance your career or business. It can make life a lot easier having a strong support network around you so when you need someone with expertise in a certain area you have people you can ask for recommendations.

Why is networking so stressful?

Networking can be stressful because it involves putting yourself out there, meeting new people, and making a good impression. If you don’t prepare before an event then you could arrive feeling nervous which will end up creating a stressful experience. Plan your route to the event, research attendees and review conversation topics before and event to help remove any stress from the experience.

How to network at an event as an introvert?

As an introvert at a networking event, focus on listening, asking thoughtful questions, and finding common interests to engage in conversations. It is also helpful to have a number of open questions prepared so if you prefer that others do most of the talking then it can help the conversation get started. Preparation before getting there is key.

How to approach a group at a networking event?

Approach a group at a networking event by introducing yourself, joining the conversation, and adding value to the discussion. It can feel intimidating to join a group already engaged in conversation but confidently introducing yourself and then asking what they were talking about can help ease you into the group.

How to avoid an awkward silence?

To avoid awkward silences, prepare some conversation starters, ask open-ended questions, and actively listen to keep the conversation flowing. Always keep a question or two up your sleeve just in case!

How to approach an individual at a networking event?

When approaching an individual at a networking event, introduce yourself confidently, ask about their background or interests, and find common ground to connect. It’s always a good place to start by talking about the topic of the event or host to find common ground.

What is the best way to follow up at a networking event?

The best way to follow up at a networking event is to send a personalised email or LinkedIn message thanking the person for their time and expressing your interest in staying in touch. Having your own business development plan or system in place can help for the long term.

How can I finish a conversation when networking?

To finish a conversation, politely excuse yourself by saying you need to speak with other attendees or have another reason. Make sure to exchange contact information, and express your interest in staying connected. Always remain graceful and if you see someone else that you want to talk to don’t immediately dart of but conclude the conversation professionally.

How long should I stay at a networking event?

The length of time you should stay at a networking event varies, but it's typically recommended to stay for at least an hour to make meaningful connections and have multiple conversations. We often say that even attending for 20 minutes can focus your mind on having meaningful conversations with new contacts.
